Sketch by Lewis Smith"Pattie and Dottie", a framed sketch by Lewis Smith. It is done in ballpoint ink on paper from a sketch pad. The paper has yellowed somewhat with age. The sketch pad was pierced through, so there is a small hole on the left edge, and also a faint crease in the lower right. It is mounted in a green wooden frame. The sketch itself measures 11 3/4" wide by 8 3/4" high, and the frame is 14 3/4" by 11 3/4". It is from the last quarter of the 20th c. The price is $250.00. Inventory Code: LS226.   Sketch by Lewis Smith ... In the frame ... With a soda can for scale.

Whimsey carvingThis is an elegant carved whimsy with very fine detail, some chip carving, and a wonderful dark, alligatored surface. The ball in cage with its intricate crest was carved from a single piece of wood. It was then mounted on the base with carved steps, and the two balls on spiral pedestals added separately. The condition is excellent, with no visible loss or wear. It is 10 1/2" high by 7 1/4" by 5". The finish is a dark lacquer that has taken on a beautiful patina. It was made in the late 1800's to early 1900's. The price is $825.00. Inventory Code: CSTH.   Intricately carved whimsey ... Another angle ... Closeup of the top ... Closeup of the bottom ... Cast iron figureThis is an extraordinary cast iron figure. It conveys a strong sense of personality and movement. The face was hand formed. This figure dates from the 19th century and was found in Tennessee. It has a dark, oxidized, weathered surface. The back is open and partly filled with concrete. It may have originally been an architectural piece or one of the supports for a garden urn. This piece has been mounted on a newer metal base. It stands about 12" high by 4 3/4" wide by 4" deep. The base is about 7" square. This figure has an old break across the top of the head and one arm. The price is $750.00. Inventory Code: TKRK.   Closeup ... With a soda can for scale ... 5 Games in One gameboardThis is a pinball type gameboard with great color and graphics. "Poosh-M-Up 5 Game Streamliner" includes "Twenty-One - Put-N-Take - Baseball - Bagatelle - Pennants". It was made by Northwestern Products, in St. Louis, MO, and has a masonite back with a metal rim, applied printed front, wooden base, and lots of small metal pins and cups. The metal spring device along the right-hand side would have shot the balls onto the board. It is 22 1/4" tall by 12" wide by 1" deep. The condition is very good, with minor wear and soiling. It was probably made in the 1940's or 50's. The price is $225.00. Inventory Code: TOOA.   "5 Games in One" gameboard ... Closeup of top half ... Close of lower half ... Closer view of top ... Carved Man with overallsThis is a folky and amusing carved man. He is wearing overalls and has his hands in the pockets. This piece was done with good detail including a fair amount of relief carving such as the eyes, straps of the overalls and eyebrows. The man stands about 9 1/2" high, is 3" wide and 2 1/4" deep. He is in excellent condition with good paint and surface and was probably carved about the 1970's. The price is $145.00. Inventory Code: TWPT.   Carved man with overalls ... Another view ... Rustic vaseThis is a rustic vase made from twigs with bark built up over a glass jar. The twigs are graduated in size from top to bottom. The jar is securely held in place and does not move. It stands 7 1/2" high by 4 1/4" by 4 1/4". The condition is very good, a few twigs have small splits where they were nailed together. Age is unknown, but appears to be about 1930's or 40's. The price is $65.00. Inventory Code: TKWT.   Rustic vase, two views ... With a soda can for scale ... From above and below.

Yard art log peopleThese two large and funky yard art people have great character. One also doubles as a birdhouse. They have log torsos with hinged wood arms and legs, plywood feet, and faces highlighted with paint and found objects. They are both in excellent, weathered condition, and could be as old as the 1950's or 60's or might be a little bit more recent, but nicely weathered and not new. They were made in Minnesota. They are priced separately, with a discount for the pair.   Both yard art log people ... Front view ... The other side ... In the yard. Following are individual details and photos.

The first one has a robot face made from found objects, with a plywood cap topped by a red light bulb in a ceramic socket. His expression seems dismayed. He has a blue hat, brown feet, and blue and yellow paint on his face. He measures 46" high when stretched out. Seated, as he is in the photos, he is 37" high from his feet to the top of his light bulb. He is about 12" wide, and 11" deep (21" deep when seated). The price is $750.00. The second person has a mechanism to make his tongue go in and out, and his eyes pop out and back. It works by turning the knob on the side of his face. His head is also a birdhouse, with a hole in the back. He has a painted plywood face, and blue hat and feet. He measures about 46" high overall, 39" high when seated. He is 13" wide, and 11" deep (22" deep seated). The price is $750.00. Inventory Code: TPSC.   Birdhouse man ... Closeup, tongue out, eyes in ... Closeup, tongue in, eyes out ... Front view ... Cast iron churnThis is the cast iron mechanism from an industrial butter or ice cream churn with a wonderful, sculptural look. The large size gives it an impressive presence. It has a dark, rich, oxidized surface with small traces of green. It is formed in two pieces that fit firmly together as a free-standing object. The pieces also look good individually, hung on a wall or displayed on a shelf. The base has gear teeth and two glass windows, and is embossed "Made In USA". Assembled, it stands 28" high by 11 1/2" in diameter. It is probably from the early 1900's, and is in excellent display condition. The price is $425.00. Inventory Code: CSSC.   Cast iron churn ... This is an old, circular, wooden cane holder or umbrella stand. It was made as an octagon from 8 pieces of hardwood pieced and mortised together which were then turned on a lathe so it is round on the outside. It was then fixed to a turned base. All of this was finished with a very dark varnish, which has darkened more with age. This piece is in very good condition with some wear in the varnish, and stands 19" high with and outer diameter of 10" on top and 12" across the base. The opening is about 8". From the collection of Herbert Hemphill. The price is $85.00. Inventory Code: ARPT.   Wooden umbrella stand ... The other side ... From above ... Closeup of base ... Another angle ... Bottom.

Bottle cap rabbits jazz bandThis is a wonderfully folky set of rabbit musicians made from bottle caps and found objects. There is a piano, drums, banjo, base, saxophone, and one rabbit who is singing and/or directing. The ears, tails, arms, and legs are bottle caps folded in half. Their whiskers are wire, the noses are tiny screws painted red at the tips. There are several larger plastic caps in the drum set, and the black keys on the piano are short lengths of heavy wire. Each figure is free standing, they can be rearranged on the wooden base. The individual rabbits range from about 5" to 6" tall. The wooden base is 11 1/2" wide by 9 1/4" deep, with the upper platform 4 3/4" high. The age appears to be c. 1970's. The condition is good. The platform the drummer sits on has lost some sequins, and a couple of the bottle cap feet appear to have been replaced. The price is $1750.00. Industrial brass faucetThis is a sculptural old and unusual long brass faucet with a heart shaped handle. It has a wonderful look to it and is now mounted on a new base and stand that display its classic features. We are not sure of the original use of this decorative industrial piece as we have not seen one quite like it before. It certainly is old, likely from the early 1900's, or possibly earlier. The top turns and can even be removed to see how the liquid would be allowed to flow. The piece is in excellent old condition. It has a great surface and color as well as very nice form. The faucet itself is 9 1/2" long by about 2" wide by 5 1/4" high. The full size, on the base and stand is 11 1/2" by 4" by 7 1/2" high. The price is $150.00. Inventory Code: TAWK.   Industrial brass faucet ... The other side ... Another view ... From above ... Front view ... Back view ... Off the base ... From below ... With stem removed ... twig basketThis is a very well-made twig basket. It has a diamond shape, crossed corners, and a bent twig handle. It is finished in a very dark varnish and is in excellent, sturdy condition with some minor scuffing. It was probably made around the 1940's. The dimensions are 16 1/2" high by 19" by 13". The price is $145.00. Inventory Code: AHOA.   Image ... Side view ... Another angle.

Key trivetHere are four very folky trivets made from felt which has been covered with old keys sewn on. The keys range in age from very old (1800's) to 1960's or 70's styles, which is probably when these were made. They are in good condition with no missing keys, although a bit grungy and with loose threads from the crude stitching. Two are 5" in diameter. The red one is 4 1/2" by 4 3/4", and the oval green one is 4 3/4" by 5 3/4". We took a photo in a frame with no glass to show what it would look like, but this is NOT framed or matted. The empty frame can be purchased with the trivets for $10.00 more. You will need to mat and mount them yourself. Three are priced at $45.00 each; the oval green one (bottom left in the group photo) is $55.00. Inventory Code: ATHR.   All four ... The backs ... One ... Second ... Third ... Fourth ... Carved lionThis is a strong and "active" carved prowling lion. It is carved from walnut with glass eyes, and mounted on a separately carved base. There is a varnish finish. It measures 16 1/2" long by 4 1/4" wide by 8" high. There are small holes in the tips of the front paws, as if separate claws were intended, but never added. The two rear feet are cracked through, but are both very solidly in place. Otherwise the condition is very good, with slight finish wear. The age is probably c. 1900. The price is $475.00. Inventory Code: TCKH.   Carved lion ... Another view ... Closeup of head ... The other side ... Another overall view ... Another closeup of head ... Front view ... Back view ...
