Mid-Century Modern model buildingThis is a model building in Mid-Century Modern style. It has a garage with painted brick front, a green hill next to the garage with steps up to the painted door, and a water tower on the roof. Two sections of the roof lift off, making it a two compartment box. It is built from wood, including some crate wood, with a Masonite bottom and metal on top of the water tower. It is 8 3/4" high by 12 1/4" by 10", from the 1950's or 60's. The condition is very good with some slight paint loss. The price is $210.00. Inventory Code: TKCS.   See a slideshow of several views [807k] ... Mid-Century Modern model building ... Another view ... Front view ... One side ... The other side ... Back view ... From above ... Large, intricate tramp art frameHere is an extremely well made, large, and unusual tramp art frame. In addition to the chip carved layers, it has extensive scroll or fretwork with designs including multiple hearts and crosses. There are also small mirrors in the corners and around the sides, a top crest, and words worked in the bottom fretwork. It was found in Pennsylvania, measures 32" by 28" by 3", is eight layers deep, and painted gold - which has oxidized over the years, giving a dark, rich tone. The base frame seems to be from the late 1800's, but the paint is more likely from around the 1920's, so, it may be an older construction that was painted at that time. It is in almost perfect condition. The inscription at the bottom is difficult to make out; it may be "Borze Zbaw Nas". With a slight change in spelling, Google translates this as Polish for "God Save Us". While this is in Polish, it is very likely that the frame is actually American, as that area of Pennsylvania had many European immigrants, some of whom brought this art form here. The price is $1275.00. Inventory Code: CPHS.   See a slideshow of several views [746k] ... Large, intricate tramp art frame ... Closeup, upper half ... Closeup, lower half ... Closeup, one corner ... Bubble Up metal signThis is a metal advertising sign: "Be Alive! Drink Bubble Up". The letters and graphics are actually raised, having been embossed by pressing from the back. The sign itself is 27 1/4" by 12" and is mounted in a newly painted wood frame which is 35 1/2" by 18 1/2" by 2" deep. The colors are fairly strong and vibrant. On the sign is a patent date of 1921. It is likely unused, as it was stored away in the basement of a commercial establishment. In the lower right is printed "Litho by J.V. Reed & CO Louisville, KY, USA". It is not perfect, having some slight staining, discoloration, paint loss, and a little rust. Even so, it is a good looking graphic piece. The price is $325.00. Inventory Code: CPHO.   See a slideshow of several views [810k] ... Metal "Bubble Up" sign ... Without the frame ... Closeup, upper left ... Upper right ... Lower left ... Lower right ... Hair sign style portraitThis is a wonderful folk art portrait titled "To Be A Man". It is painted in the style of the African hair signs, but with much more realism and depth of feeling. The back actually has preliminary sketching and lettering for a different hair sign. It is painted on 3/8" plywood, and signed "By Victor Asante 27 Nov. 2004". The piece measures 25" high by 17 3/4" wide. It is not quite rectangular, and the bottom corners are rounded. There is some damage around the edges and nail holes where it was mounted, as is common with hair signs. This is visible in the photos, and does not detract from the strong image. The price is $340.00. Inventory Code: TRAT.   See a slideshow of several views [554k] ... Hair sign-style portrait ... Closeup, upper left ... Upper right ... Lower left ... Lower right ... Ring toss gameHere are two folky, hand made, painted ring toss games. Each has a handle for the player to hold while swinging the ring on the string and trying to catch it on the man's nose. These both have wooden bases they set into for display.

This man is cut from pine, painted with a suit and tie, green hat, and red nose, and then varnished. It has a great surface, with heavier patina on the handle from lots of use. The donut-shaped wooden ring appears to have been hand carved. At one time it was cracked and reglued. The man measures 9 1/2" long by 6" high by 5/8" thick. The ring is 3 1/4" in diameter by 3/8" thick. It is in very good, used condition with minor surface wear, especially on the ring and the tip of the nose. Probably it was made in the 1930's or 40's. The old string is fragile. The price is $100.00. Inventory Code: THHK.   Ring toss game ... The other side ... With the ring on his nose ... Front views ... Back view ... Off the base ... Ring toss gameThis ring toss man is cut from 1/4" plywood, painted with a silver face, dark red hat, and black handle. He is 7 3/4" long by 5" high. The ring is two layers of heavy rubber, probably gaskets of some kind, glued together and painted dark brown. He is in very good, used condition with minor surface wear, from the 1930's or 40's. The string is old and used, but may have been replaced. The price is $85.00. Inventory Code: THHR.   Ring toss game ... The other side ... Front and back views ... With the ring on his nose ... This is an exceptional relief carved and painted whisk broom holder covered with fraternal symbols. It includes the three rings and axe of Odd Fellows, the sword and moon of the Shriners, and the star of Rebecca. In addition, it has a face carved in a center panel and the words "MELHA" and "In Hoc Signo Vinces". The size is 14" high, about 10" wide, and 5" deep. It is made out of pine, and was probably done around the early part of the 1900's. The condition is very good, with one tiny chip, very slight paint loss, and a tight age crack on the front. The carving is even more detailed than the photos show. The price is $675.00. Inventory Code: AWCR.   Overall Image ... Close-up of the top ... Lower front, from below ... Here is a collection of small pottery animal figures. All are anonymous and of unknown age, though they were all in the Howard Smith collection for some time. Each has a strong folky look and "personality". They are described and priced separately below.   All of the pottery animals.

Pottery redware roosters First are two roosters that appear to be made by the same hand. The larger one has mottled glaze, 3 1/4" high. It has been broken in half and reglued. The price for this larger rooster is $45.00. Inventory Code: PCRH.

The smaller one is folky and stylized, with good form, in a dark glaze. It is in perfect condition, and is 2" tall. The price for the smaller rooster is $95.00. Inventory Code: PCRW.   Pottery roosters ... Another view ... The other side ... Front view ... Back view ... From above ... From below ... With a soda can for scale.

Pottery goatA very strange pottery animal; it looks like a very thin goat with ribs sticking out. It has a dark glaze and measures 4 1/2" long by 1 1/4" high by 1 1/4" wide. One ear is missing. The price is $65.00. Inventory Code: PHPP.   Pottery goat ... The other side ... Front and back views ... From above and below ... With a soda can for scale.

Redware toadAn animated redware toad, unglazed, with orange painted mouth. It is 5 1/2" long by 4" wide by 2 1/2" high. The right front foot is broken off. The price is $45.00. Tramp art wall pocket with birdsThis is a beautiful tramp art magazine rack, decorated with birds on free-form branches and dated 1927. Below the birds is a large sunburst. The front folding section is attached with two chains, and includes a star and the inscription "Souvenir De L'Exposition". The date is in the center of the lower diamond. The birds, all the many spear tips, and a few other highlights are painted a dark mustard. The rest of the piece is patterned with light and dark woods, finished with a clear lacquer or varnish that is slightly bubbled. This rack is presumably Canadian, with the French inscription and a partly visible Postum label on the back. It is in outstanding, excellent condition. There are very skillful repairs on the two birds, and one very tiny chip missing from one spear. This impressive piece measures 29 3/4" high by 19 1/2" wide by 7 3/4" deep. The price is $1150.00. Amish child's quiltThis is a wonderful, graphic, Amish child's quilt. It is 45" by 64". The small size makes it perfect for display on a wall, although it certainly can be used on a bed or as an accent piece. It was bought from the family in Medina Co., Homersville, OH. This visually interesting cotton quilt is in excellent washed condition and was made around 1950. It is machine pieced and hand quilted. The price is $475.00. Inventory Code: AKHH.   Amish child's quilt ... Closeup ... Second closeup ... Third closeup ... Back ... Closeup of back.

Here are two folky, hand-made airplanes; both done by the same person - Oliver Rzick. They were done in 1999 and 2000. They are decorated with stripes and stars cut from newspapers, and have wheels taken from toys. Each has a metal hanger top and bottom, and they can be hung individually or one below the other in a chain.

The first plane, Alaska Air, is an MD-80. It is made from wood covered with a Gesso-like material to give added form. It was then painted gray and decorated with pieces cut from newspapers. It has further detailing done in both paint and marker. It is 28" long, 8" high, and has a wingspan of 29". It is in very good condition with a few flakes of gray paint missing. The price is $210.00. Inventory Code: AWKH.   Model plane ... From above ... One side ... The other side ... Back ... From below ... Closeup of bottom.

The Stealth Bomber is made from thin tongue and groove wood, with an old varnish surface. Besides the applied paper stars and strips, it has further detailing done in marker. The plane has two sets of metal wheels screwed to the bottom. The third set has the bracket, but the wheels are missing. This plane is 16" long, about 3" high, has a wingspan of about 41". It is in very good condition. The price is $250.00. Inventory Code: AWKO.   From above ... Overall ... Side view ... Closeup ... Another closeup ... From below ... Closeup of bottom.

One of several original Mexican Sombreros. They are all in excellent condition, and are not new. They appear to be 20 to 30 years old, or possibly older and are wonderful, decorative objects - in addition to being just the right headwear for that "special" occasion. This sombrero is a very splashy black velvet decorated top and bottom with applied, silver and white braid and multicolored sequins. It is in excellent condition, and measures 24" across. You can see the rest on our Sombreros page. The price is $125.00. Inventory Code: AHHW.   Top view ... Closeup of top ... Bottom view ... Side view.

19th century standThis is a small table or candle stand from the 19th century. It has a round top, pedestal base with an octagonal shaft, and stands on four feet made from wooden spools. The dark brown painted surface has a rich patina and is very finely alligatored. The table stands 31" high; the top is 14" in diameter and the base is 23" by 23". It is in good condition, strong and sturdy. The top is slightly warped and has a short, tight, age crack. There is some minor paint loss, one spool is missing a chip, and there are a few light spots like paint. The price is $350.00. Inventory Code: TKTP.   See a slideshow of several views [468k] ... 19th c. stand ... Two more views ... Two additional angles ... From above ... Another view of the top ... Closeup of the base ... Iron Bog ShoesThis is a pair of iron bog shoes with very nice form and look. Similar to snowshoes, but made of metal, these were used for walking across muddy bogs. They were found in Michigan. From the earlier part of the 20th century, these are in good, used condition, slightly warped. They have a dark, oxidized surface with slight remnants of black paint. Each one measures 37 1/4" long by 12 1/2" wide by about 1 1/2" thick. The price is $425.00. Inventory Code: TCWO.   Iron bog shoes ... The other side ... Closeup ... Side view ... Here is a small picture made primarily from cut up stamps and highlighted with pen and ink. The scene is the interior of a room with two chairs, fireplace, wall paintings, and more. This is probably about 30-35 years old, with some of the stamps being a bit older. It is marked on the back: "Francisceines Missionnaires de Maire, Quebec". We have had a couple other ones done by them; so apparently this mission made stamp pictures to raise funds. The painting is in excellent condition, with a tear to the backing paper. The frame is 3 1/8" by 4 1/8". The price is $85.00. Inventory Code: ATKA.   Image.

Bottle cap basketThis is a sculptural looking bottle cap basket. It has good form, color, and size, and is in excellent condition. The basket is made from old cork lined caps. It is 13" high by 11" wide by 9" deep, and was likely made around the 1940's. The price is $245.00. Inventory Code: CSSO.   See a slideshow of several views [626k] ... Watercolor by CD Love. There is a sprig of flowers painted on the reverse. It is 6" by 9", in very good condition, the paper is slightly yellowed. From St. Louis area, probably 1940's. The price is $95.00. Inventory Code: APRH. Image.

This is a very folky, out of perspective relief carving of a man, holding a guitar (or is it a gun?), sitting in a chair. The chair seems to float in midair. It is carved, base and all, from a single piece of pine, and painted. The free-standing shape may have been made as a bookend, or just so it would sit on a shelf. C. 1930's, it is 7 1/4" high by 3 1/2" wide by 2 1/2" deep. A small age split in the base does not detract, otherwise it is in very good condition. The price is $225.00. Inventory Code: ASSO.   Folky relief carving ... Side views ... Closeup ... Closeup of the base ... Back ... From above ... From below ... With a soda can for scale.

Here is a planter made from an old can surrounded by old-fashioned painted wood clothespins (not the spring type). The weathered paint is brown over green. Probably made around the 1940's, it is in very good condition. The size is 4 1/4" high by 7 1/4" in diameter. The price is $160.00. Inventory Code: PRWS. Image.

Whimsey carvingThis is a carved whimsey that is very interesting in that it seems to have been a work in progress. The balls are still fixed, yet all the hard work was done, so they could have been released easily. The piece has nice form and a naturally aged and darkened surface. It was likely made in the 1940's or so, is 14" long by 1 1/4" square, and in excellent condition. The price is $110.00. Inventory Code: AKCT.   Image ... Second view ... Third view ... Fourth view ... Fifth view.

Tramp art crucifix shrineThis is an extremely unusual, small and intricate tramp art display case. It has a hinged door with glass, and glass on the other three sides. The case contains a crucifixion scene, and includes many carved wooden tools associated with the crucifixion. It also has three lithographs representing Jesus and the two thieves (although they all seem to be Jesus). The case is topped with a cross and has an ornate finial and other details. It is finished in an old, oxidized gold paint, and was likely made around C. 1920's. The case is about 11 1/2" to the top of the cross, by 5 1/2" wide and 4" deep. It is not in perfect condition, as it has quite a lot of bits and pieces of loss. Obviously, this is a consideration, but in balance, is clearly outweighed by the rarity of this one-of-a-kind piece. The price is $350.00. Inventory Code: AKAO.   Image ... 3/4 view ... Another view from above ... From above ... One side ... The other side ... Back ... Another angle ... Closeup front ... Twig standThis is an old, rustic twig stand, with a great look and surface. It was likely made in the 1930's or earlier of hickory or a similar hardwood, with a plywood and pine top. The bark is still on, although a few slivers are curling. The stand is 27 1/4" high, 31" wide, and 15" deep. It is in excellent, sturdy condition. On the back, a bend section of one piece is missing. The surface is unfinished and the color is a rich medium brown. The price is $375.00. Inventory Code: AKTR.   Twig stand ... 3/4 view ... 3/4 view, other side ... Closeup ... Another closeup ... Pickle in a bottle whimsyHere is the classic Pickle in a Bottle. Sealed in a very old bottle is this large pickle in amber colored liquid - probably pickling juice. The pickle is larger than the opening, and fills the square bottle, which is about 6" high by 2 1/4" on each side, and may be from the 1800's. It is in excellent condition. The price is $125.00.
