NAACP art by Ed WelchHere are four vivid mixed media paintings by Ed Welch, celebrating civil rights activists and African-American history. They combine paint on composite board with collage, stickers, glitter, and found objects. Each is framed and ready to hang. John Edward Welch, who lived from 1918 to 2011, grew up working on a farm and became a self educated sign painter who applied his professional skills to these strongly artistic expressions.

This is a portrait of Roy Wilkins, "Former Executive Director of NAACP". The name above the portrait is embellished with glitter. The large letters down the left side and the shield below the portrait are cut from layered poster board. The birds, figure of Justice, and flag are applied paper, and the smaller letters on the left are individual stickers. Reflective tape divides the two panels. There is some very slight wear along the edges of the panel. It is signed E Welch and dated 2000. The painting itself is 36" high by 23 1/2" wide; as mounted it is 38" high by 25 1/2" wide by 2 1/4" deep. The price is $500.00. Inventory Code: CTWH.   NAACP art by Ed Welch ... NAACP art by Ed WelchThis painting honors Jessie M. Rattley, "Former Mayor of Newport News, Virginia". The portrait is embellished with an applied costume jewelry heart. In the left hand panel, portraits of students in mortarboards and a professional typist commemorate "Jessie M. Rattley's Business College". Reflective tape and glitter enhance the lower border. It is signed, not dated, and has an inner gold frame mounted in an outer black frame. The size as mounted is 43" wide by 31" high by 2 1/4" deep. The price is $500.00. NAACP art by Ed WelchThis tribute to Walter White and the NAACP is very detailed, with more applied collage elements than the other pieces. The Capitol, the eagle, the figure of Justice, the banners, and all of the lettering were applied. The fancy script at the top was cut from two layers of poster board. It is signed "E Welch", not dated. There is slight wear around the edges. The painting itself measures 36" wide by 24" high. As mounted it is 38" by 26" by 2 1/4" deep. The price is $500.00. W. E. B. Du Bois by Ed WelchThis is a portrait of W. E. B. Du Bois, with the words "We Need You". There is a smaller portrait of Abraham Lincoln, with a quote emphasizing Lincoln's priority was saving the Union, not freeing the slaves. It is signed "E Welch 97". There is minor wear around the edges of the panel. The painting itself measures 36" wide by 24" high. As mounted it is 38" by 26" by 2 1/4" deep. The price is $500.00. Inventory Code: CTWO.   "W. E. Here are several patriotic drawings done on the envelope of a collector's issue of stamps. They are on 6 3/4 envelopes, unused except for the cancellation mark and in excellent condition. They are 6 1/2" by 3 5/8". We have several more envelopes decorated by the same hand with various motifs, ranging from the 1960's to the 80's.

Nixon drawingThis envelope has an intensely colored sketch of Richard Nixon and the words "Richard M. Nixon Jan. 09, 1913" stamped where the address would go. It was selected because the postmark date was Nixon's birthday. The stamps honor NATO, SEATO, literacy, and voter registration. The cancellation date is Jan 09, 1982. It is in excellent condition. The price is $85.00. Inventory code: ACHS.   Image.

Liberty drawingThis is a patriotic theme with an eagle, flag, and shield marked "Liberty". The envelope is cancelled June 8, 1963, "Stamporee Convention Station, Bradenton, FLA". The envelope is unused except for the cancellation mark and in excellent condition. The price is $85.00. Inventory Code: ACCH.   Image.

Flag raising carving by Unto JarviHere are two carved assemblages by Unto Jarvi. He was a Kentucky folk artist who was born in Finland and came to the U.S. as a child. After his retirement in 1971 he painted and carved his "Jarvi's Little People" to depict his history and way of life. His work was part of the exhibition "Kentucky Spirit: The Naive Tradition" at the Owensboro Museum of Fine Art in 1991. Jarvi died that same year. We have another carved scene by Unto Jarvi available here.

This scene is a group of three men raising the flag. An older white-haired man is holding the lines to the flagpole. Watching him are a sunburned man in overalls who is holding a hoe, and an African-American man wearing a hard hat. Each man and the flagpole was carved separately then mounted on a plywood and pine base, which has a burned signature "Jarvi 1986". The figures range from 6" to 6 1/2" high, and the overall height is 17". The base is 10" by 10 3/4". The condition is excellent, with a few small scuff marks on the base. The price is $525.00. Drummer whirligigThis is a good looking and colorful whirligig of a uniformed drummer. As the vividly striped blade turns, the drummer's arms alternate up and down, beating the sticks on the drum. The whirligig is made from 1/2" pine, mounted on a metal base. It is 11 1/2" long by 20 1/2" high as mounted. The man is 8 1/2" tall and the blade is 12" across. From the second half of the 20th c., it is in very good, slightly weathered condition. The price is $325.00. Inventory Code: CCWP.   Drummer whirligig ... The other side ... Arms moved ... This is an oil painting, on unstretched canvas, of a W.W.II era graveyard. Rows of white crosses, surrounded by red poppies, recede into the distance. In the background are ruined buildings, rows of barbed wire, cannons, and explosions, as bombers fly overhead. Probably painted during or shortly after the war, it is unsigned. There is a 3" tear in the bottom edge, and two small nail holes at the top, where it was probably hung once. It is 44" high by 71" wide, rectangular: not skewed as it looks in the photo. The price is $325.00. Inventory Code: PKOC.   Image.

Trench artA very unusual "trench art" (actually attributed as P.O.W.) jeep and tank. These are models made from tin cans, and found objects. From W.W.II, they are intricate, detailed replicas with moving parts: wheels and steering wheel on the jeep, and the gun, treads, and pulleys on the tank. They are both in very good condition, with an old oxidized surface. The jeep is 5" long by 2 3/4" wide and high. The tank is 6" long, 3 3/4" wide and 4 1/2" high. The price is $200.00 each, or $375.00 for both. Inventory Code: AHSP.   Image ... Another view ... From above.

Coal trophyThis is a folky and historical relief carved trophy made from coal. It is 4" wide, 3 3/4" high, and 2" deep. The highly polished surface has the writing "First Aid Contest Kingston, Pa." and the date 1942. The symbols include the keystone for Pennsylvania, the V for victory, and the cross for the Red Cross. It is in excellent condition. The price is $95.00. Inventory Code: ACTP. Overall view ... Back view ... From below.

Model tankThis tank is hand made from a composition material, with a nail for a gun. It is 4" long by 2 1/4" wide by 2 1/4" high, painted brown. It is in fair condition with slight damage around the edges of the treads. The price is $25.00. Inventory Code: AAWT.   Model tank ...2nd view ...3rd view.

This crayon drawing by Joseph Martin illustrates the evils of the world. It includes cards, dice, a fetus, drugs, gun, a tombstone, and a Bible with a padlock through it surrounding a brain. It is 6" by 8 1/4", in excellent condition. The price is $160.00. Inventory Code: POKO.   Image.

Political memory bottleRemember the 70's? This political memory bottle is covered with Republican campaign buttons, flags, plastic marching band figures, bullets, a soldier, "Official U.S. Taxpayer G.O.P" buttons, and little plastic critters, some with wiggly eyes. From the late 70's, it is in excellent condition, 12" tall by 4 1/4" by 3". The price is $225.00. Inventory Code: POCT.   Image.

CollageThis delightful W.W.II era collage was made from cut paper by Virginia Love, a girl in St. Louis, MO. It measures 8 1/2" by 11 3/4", in a frame 12 3/4" by 16", and is in excellent condition. The price is $225.00. Inventory Code: PWHC.   Image.
